摘要:
Six area chapters of Suànshùshū 筭數書 The Book of Mathematics from Zhangjiashan Han Dynasty tomb 247 are translated into English. The translated chapters are Yǐyuáncáifāng 以睘(圜)材方(From circular timber cutting square),Yǐfāng cáiyuán以方材睘(圜)(From square timber cutting circle),Qǐguǎng 啓廣(Finding width),Qǐzòng 啓從(縱)(Finding length),Fāngtián方田(Square farmland),and Lǐtián里田(Farmland measured in lǐ里).Before translation, some preparatory work is done on six aspects: (1)There are four versions of transcripts, and this study is based on the infrared photographs of the original slips in Zhangjiashan Hanmu zhujian[Ersiqi hao mu]張家山漢墓竹簡[二四七號墓](Bamboo Slips from the Han Dynasty Tomb at Zhangjiashan [Tomb 247]);(2)Some typically Chinese measures occur in the target texts and they are listed as well as their metric equivalents;(3)The scribe added original marks on the slips, and researchers added transcription marks and modern Chinese punctuations on the transcript. The appearances and meanings of the marks are elaborated; (4)The slips have two types of serial numbers: archeological grouping number and transcription number, and what the texts carry is the latter;(5) The textual structure of five chapters consists of four parts: the chapter title, problem, answer and algo rithmic rule, with Lǐtián里田(Farmland measured in lǐ里) as a special case; And (6) Intercalary September,186 BCE is the terminus ante quem, and the terminus post quem could be as early as 356 ***, notes are provided to each chapter to facilitate understanding of the texts and translation.
